Fondue's Popularity

Fondue is back and in a big way! The cheesy food fad that was popular in the 1970s has seen a massive resurgence in the past couple of years. For people who enjoy fondue, it is time to get back into the swing of things.

Stores have begun selling larger number of fondue pots and there are catalogs, restaurants and various websites that offer a wide variety of fondue related items. It has become more popular and will have a longer stay in power than it had in the 1970s.

For people who like fondue, they often say that it is fun and fast and it is a perfect dish to be served for an intimate gathering. Fondue performs a double duty, which means that it is not only food but also entertainment.

There has been a rapid growth in the number of fondue-based restaurants and they have increased drastically over the years. It is also finding a place in fine dining in some of New York’s trendiest and newest restaurants. They all have cheese fondue dishes on their menus and it is a very popular product.

Retailers are the ones who have seen a total increase in interest for this product. There has been a double-digit growth in the sales of fondue pots both online and in regular brick-and-mortar shops. There is also a demand for fondue cookbooks, fondue plates, fondue forks, fondue sets, fondue condiment sets and mixes and sauces.

Fondue (from fondre, the French verb “to melt”) originated in Switzerland, where the local people would take stale bread and old cheese and make it into a meal. They would do this by heat and some wine in a communal pot and add in chunks of cheese. Once the cheese had melted, they would spear the bread with a long fork and dip it into the cheese sauce; this was the introduction of fondue. It became popular in the 1950s from GIs returning from Europe after the first and Second World War, but it was in the 70s that it really exploded.

These days there’s a fondue pot for every type of fondue available. This would include cheese, meats, chocolate, fried and Asian. They are made with a much stronger material and they are often stainless steel, ceramic or cast iron. There are a wide range of colors available that make these items the trendiest of them all.
